Part 2

Yingdi's Reflections

Austine

Asian American X by Austine

In the first story in the Asian American X, the author Jenny Cheng was struggle with the problem weather she is consider as a Taiwanese or an American. She is upset because she doesn’t know where she should belong. Her brother, who also is in the same difficult position discuss a problem about different categories of Asian Americans in the States. They came out with three different categories at last; FOB’s, Twinkies and the Floaters. She considered herself as the Floaters if she really has to be put into the three of them, but she didn’t like to be labeled in either of them. Living in these two different countries with different races and ethnicity culture, she as an Asian American get lose very easily. She has no clue of what direction she is going and often felt like a person living on a no man land. Throughout her own cultural experience, it reminds her of the bat story. This bat wants to be the best of both the bird world and the mammal world; obviously, it can’t and it is unfair for him to do that. I really feel (感受很深) deeply when she talks about the bat story. But I also disagree with her a little bit with the three categories part, if you think of it in another way or view this problem differently, there could be more categories of these Asian Americans and also not all things are as bad as she described and mentioned. After she talked about the problem of weather she should be, she also changed her view of all these things. I, agree with her conclusion saying that no matter where she is from or how she looks; Jenny Chen is Jenny Chen. This is the truth that will never change.

In the second story, the author is the “Twinkie” type of people that Jenny had mentioned in her article. She start to hate everything about Chinese when she grew up in America. She avoid it so that it will be easier to get along with the Caucasians. She thinks she had such bad luck to be a Chinese. But everything changed after she start to learn Chinese dancing, she saw those people who are also the same as her for being a Chinese American. But what they are different from her is that they are confident with themselves, they are not sad for being a minority besides a Caucasian or by how they look. A really big change of her happened by the time she visit in China, she start to love speaking Chinese and everything about china and Asian culture. At last she mentioned that to be a happy person, you have to have two things; that is, to have confidence of yourself and that you ca be an American with out giving up being a Chinese. I strongly agree when she says about the confident in one’s self.

Both of the articles really expressed what I think of myself also of how we always have the problem of living in two different countries.

Asian American X

I agree with her list of "What they taught me ". The reason for that is because, that is what my family believe in however, her list of "What they didn't teach me" is also true because, in this world working hard is not enough you need to have the connection to the right people to get things done. In our world true friends are like your family they will aways be there for you and sometimes they are the ones that you tell everything to because, they know who you are and they sometime goes through the same thing as you so, they will not judge like some older family members would. My own process was like the author that wrote the Asian American X. The reason for that is because, my family and I moved to America when I was very young  (younger then anyone else in our family that moved here). I don't know a lot of Chinese at all because, I've only been to first grade when I was in China. Then when I moved to the USA I had to learn English. Which made me forget a lot of the Chinese that I've learn when I was in China. My parents are thinking about sending me back to China to learn Chinese or getting a teacher to teach me online. In my opinion I think it's really annoying when ever I go back to China and people keeps asking me why don't I learn some Chinese when I'm in the USA ? I just tell them it's really hard to find someone to teach me Chinese when I live in a small town where there are not other Chinese people around and plus I don't really have time because of school work and sports.

American Born Chinese

Yang uses humor to make light of experiences that are not so humorous for the immigrants that experience them. Often when reading we laugh at painful experiences of the characters. Have you or anyone you've known had experiences that were funny to others, but painful to you? If possible, explain. Do you think Yang used the technique of humor appropriately?
I remember I had a friend that came from Japan and she didn't speak English at all. Even though she did it wasn't pronounced as accurate so people made fun of her. But she felt really sad because it's not her fault that she can't speak English, people just didn't understand. No I don't think Yang used the technique of humor appropriately.

Yingdi's interview

I came to the US in 2006 for my Ph.D study.

I've been living in the US for 4 years.

Before I came to Wisconsin, I had lived in Hunan, Shenzhen, and Beijing in China.

When I first came to the US, you may not believe it, the largest challenge is food! I couldn't stand eating Sandwiches as a meal. From a Chinese point of few, it's not "real" food, just some kind of snacks. For me, having a meal means there's rice, some meat and vegetables. Another challenge is language, not that I don't understand the individual words that Americans speak, it is the way the talk with idioms and specific stories that I have no background knowledge about them. Finally, one thing I wanna share is the way of communication. I realized little by little that Americans, especially mid-westerners are very polite and really nice. They talk in a very nice and praising way, and at the same time, they like to be constantly praised. As a Chinese, I'm used to the way of straight forward when I see there's a problem and what is the better solution, but some Americans cannot accept different opinions or the way that the other person tell them directly there's something wrong. I think the language and eating habit are easier to overcome, but the way how to behave as myself and at the same time being the same as the Americans is difficult.

One thing I think it's very interesting and is related to the communication challenged I mentioned above is a little conflict I had with an American young guy. This happened the first year when I came to Madison. I lived in a house with a bunch of housemates and the house manager would take care of the house maintenance such as fixing the toilets. One day the flush of the toilet didn't work and the house manage sent a guy to fix it. We knew each other - he was a undergraduate student of UW-Madison and he is a really tall guy. So in the past every time he fixed any tiny problems of the house, we would praise him like "awesome, super...". But that day, after he thought he fixed the toilet, I found that it didn't work. So I pointed it out to him and suggested where the problem was, he became very unhappy and finally angry. He yelled at me that he was a professional and he knew what he was doing. He also said I was defensive. I didn't know what to say but wanted to laugh: how could I be defensive for such a tiny issue in front of a 6.3 feet tall guy? Anyways, I just thought it's an interesting experience and also I learned from it how people like to be praised no matter what they did.

> Part II

I'm not quite sure if it is the right description. If the US is really a culture oven, then all the different cultures and peoples are supposed to be in the same oven (the same social stage) and receive the same importance and respect. But it's certain not the reality: minorities such as African Americans, Latinos, Asia Americans are still marginalized.

I think immigrants really help bring in different cultures and valuable knowledge and skills from the other part of the world.

It's actually happening now in China that more and more foreign faces showing in China. It's going to change the social structures of the country and have lots of challenges as well. For example, immigrants and their children's education, culture adaption ect.

I haven't immigrated to the US yet. So I'm not quite sure if I did, how it would change my identity as a Chinese.

Kitchen Chinese

1. My parents have thought about moving back to china many times. The reason for that is because, we have many family members over there, and culture difference here.  I personally have thought about moving back to China couple times, but the only reason for that is because of my family there. I've been in the America since I was 7 so, I've lived here for most of my life.
2. I think the author use the title Kitchen Chinese is because, many Chinese people that came to America from China that works/owns a restaurant only knows the basic English like what the food is called.
3. No. I do not think that the younger have to live up to the perfection of the elder nor do I think that the younger have to do what the elder wishes she could do. Yes, I personally do think that Chinese parents have different expectations for their children then most American parents. For an example most of the Chinese parents don't want their kids to date anyone until they are out of school however, most of the American parents don't really care if their kids are dating or not.
4. In my opinion, the best way to learn about or understand a foreign place or culture is to go to that country and live there. That way you can see how people live day to day basses
5.Yes I have felt like a fish out of water socially, culturally. Like many Americans celebrate Christmas and my family don't celebrate it. I adapt by telling myself that everyone is different and just because, some of my friends do something don't mean I have to do it and many people also don't do it.
6. Yes I in my experience this is a widespread stereotype of American people. I form my opinion of other people by first getting to know who they are and being their friend.

2010-10-16

Asian American X

Imagine you are writing your blog to one or both of these authors. What did you identify with and disagree with in their writing?

I agree with her “What They Taught Me” list because this is what my parents taught me. They taught me those virtues since I was little. I also agree with her second list because those are taught in American culture. My friends taught me those virtues.
However I don’t agree with the categories of Asian Americans. I have never heard any of those terms until I read this. All of the Asian Americans I have met are proud to be Asian and they don’t fit in any of the three categories.

American Born Chinese

The Monkey King chooses to be stuck in the mountain of rocks for 500 years, to escape he must return to his "true form." How do the other characters experience this in American Born Chinese? Have you experienced a similar situation in your life?

Jin Wang experiences this by changing from Danny, back to himself. I predict that Wei-Chen will change back to a monkey because this is the theme, returning back ones true form. And no, I have not experienced a similar situation in my life.

Kitchen Chinese

1. No because I was born here and I feel like this is where I belong.

2. The author used the term “kitchen Chinese” because that was the only time she ever heard or said mandarin, in the kitchen. Language plays a big role because this is Isabelle’s main problem throughout the story. She couldn’t speak mandarin when needed to.

3. I think that the younger has to live up to the perfection of the elder because that is how my household feels like. My younger sister is trying to be better than what I had been. I feel that Chinese American parents do have different expectations than American parents because my parents are immigrants from China. They were raised in different environments than the American parents; therefore they would have different expectations of their children.

4. Isabelle’s discovery of Chinese affects her perception of China by showing her new things she had never seen before. I believe that visiting the foreign place is the way to learn or understand the foreign place. When visiting foreign place, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.”

5. I have felt like a fish out of water whenever I join a new club, organization, or team. I adapt by making friends.

6. Yes I believe that “all Americans have yellow hair and big noses” is a widespread stereotype. When I visited my cousins in China, they asked if Americans were fat and had big noses. Other people in other countries form their opinions on America based on the media in their home country. I form my opinions on other people based on how they treat other people and me.

2010-10-05

Kitchen Chinese

1. I've always wanted to move to China and around 4 years ago my family decided to move back. So, right now i don't really want to move to any other countries since i've already been to the country i wanted to move to.

2. I think the author chose this title because of her lack of Chinese when she first moved there. Language plays a big role in this story because it's something she needed to communicate with.

3. Yes, i think that it is true that the younger one has to live up to the perfection of the elder. Chinese American parents have way more and different expectations than American parents.

4. Isabelle noticed that learning about her culture and language was very important. I think the best way to understand a foreign place is to actually go/live there.

5. I felt like a fish out of water the first year i went back to China because I only knew the basics of mandarin so it was hard to communicate with people. Even though i went to an International school, almost all of them spoke Chinese and i was like the only one not knowing. It took me pretty long to adapt to this but i learned to adapt by learning the language and practicing how to speak mandarin.

6. Yes, Americans having "yellow hair and big noses" is a widespread stereotype. Americans are known for being fat more than having "yellow hair and big noses". I know this because when i was in China there were people asking " Are all Americans fat? " I form my opinions of other people on how they act.

Kitchen Chinese by Austine (容榕)

1. I would like to live into other country like Japan or Korea. To learn about more of their cultures and languages since i am always intrested in these countries. But i won't consider to uproot my life because i want to keep my original culture but also learning in new cultures.
2. I think she chooses "kitchen Chinese" as her title because cuisine in this country affect her new life in China a lot. She'd also mentioned in the book that there were many different names of food in Chinese and I think she sees the Chinese cuisines as the Basic of all China.Language is a really big part of her new life. She was ashame that she realize she couldn't even speak proper Chinese for being a Chinese/American. That is why Language stand for a big role in this story.
3. Yes, i think Chinese parents had always been expecting more froom their children than those American parents. To respect the elderly are always one of the top important thing in traditional Chinese family. Since these Chinese parents were grown up in china or chinese family, they had been taught in this way and so of course they will expect their children to do the same.
4. Isabelle really changed a lot on her perception of viewing China. Before she go to China, she thinks China is jus her parents' hometown and she also fell bad or embarrased because she was half of it. She doesn't care about these Chinese culture because she doen;t want to be diferent from her classmates and friends. After she went to China, she realized that her origin hometown was quite interesting to discover and to understand it.I think the best way of learning a foriegn language is like Isabelle; go to that country and learn about everything. Like me, for example, I've been learing English since i was in first grade. My elementary school was actually a bilingual school so i had to have english for half day and chinese for half day. And of course, my English has a certain level.(not too bad can read and write and speak) so when I came to the US last year, it wasn't as horrible as i thought. But also, i've notice that it is i would say 80% different from how i learn English inTaiwan, the teachers the classmate the room the everything in here was so different. Then i realized that you don't really know the culture just by learning their language because there are always much more interesting thing than you can think of when you actually live in the country.
5. Yes, i do feel like a fish out of the water even now in the very minute. I always feel like the left out person in the school because first, i do not know anyone in the school. Second, people speak really fast English that i couldn't understand. And third, i don't know anything like i dont know whats next or what am i suppose to do. It was just terrible and a mess. But then i start to meet some people and try to be active at making friend or talking to people and ask questions in class or when i do not understand.
6. The thinking of "blond hair and big nose" is definitly a stereotype of Americans. As you can see on the street, not all americans have blond hair. And obviously I dont think there were actually a lot of big noses. I think now in many countries there are still many people having this stereotype. And my opinions of America, i say that they are "ethnocentric" (just learn this word), Americans always think they are the best and they are everything like there are only Americans in the whole entire world. I think they are too proud of themselves. Like today, one of my classmate asked me "can you speak Chinese?" and I said yes, and i told her that i am from Taiwan and she paused....then she said are you Japanese? i said no i am Taiwanese. And "then" she asked, what is the difference between chinese and Japanese??? WOW!! i thought in my mind because they are acting like they've heard Chinese for the first time like they dont even know Chinese People exist. And this is how i think of most of them.(not all)

You have at least two options:

Option One (image files):

In PowerPoint, choose Save-as, and choose an image format (eg .png). When the system asks if you want all slides or just the current one, choose All.

Then upload all the image files that were created to your blog (I usually upload them to Picasa web albums first, and then just link from my blog to there)

Option Two (embedded presentation):
Upload the PowerPoint to Google Docs, making sure that the "Convert documents, presentations, and spreadsheets to the corresponding Google Docs formats"... option is ticked.

Once it's uploaded, choose Return to Google Docs

Open the presentation (by clicking on it)

Click on the Share button in the top RIGHT corner of the Presentation Editor, and choose Publish / Embed.

Click the Publish Document button.

Choose a player size (I like Medium for presentations that are going inside posts), how fast to advance slides, whether to start the presentation as soon as the player loads, and what to do when the last slide is reached.

Copy the HTML that is provided.

Return to Blogger.

If you want the presentation to go into a post, edit the post, go into Edit HTML mode, and paste in the HTML.
If you want the presentation to go into a gadget, go into Layout / Page Elements / Add a Gadget / HTML-Javascript, and paste the HTML into the Content field.

Kitchen Chinese

1. My family has considered moving back to China several times, because of family back there and the fact that becoming fluent in Chinese would be more helpful for job searching later on in our futures. In addition to this, my parents could feel more comfortable living in China.

2. I think the author chose “Kitchen Chinese” as the title because the author’s lack of proficiency with Mandarin and her ability to only speak “kitchen Chinese” is the reason for many of the events in the book. Language plays a major role in this book – it prevents Isabelle from getting her wanted job, and it isolates her from the rest of the Chinese.

3. Chinese parents definitely have many more expectations for their children than American parents. This is probably because of the difficulties they had to face to immigrate here and give their children an easier life. Their children have a childhood easier than their childhood, so Chinese parents expect their children to do more.

4. Isabelle’s discovery of Chinese revealed to her the importance of learning more about her heritage and how she should not have neglected her Chinese education. The best way to understand about a foreign place is probably total immersion.

5. When I was in elementary school, I felt like a fish out of water the most – I had friends, but there were some kids that were and still are prejudiced. I learned to adapt by surrounding myself with good people and ignoring the racists – nowadays, I never see them anymore, and those that I do see don’t try to annoy me.

6. Yes, this probably is somewhat of a widespread stereotype – although I think that the “fat” stereotype is more common. I think people form their opinions of Americans from the Americans they see in the media – for example, television. I form my opinions of people on how they act.
